The $250 Diagnostic

Find out what your books can and can't tell you.

A written review of how your books track jobs, labor and overhead, and a call to walk through it. Start here before you commit to anything monthly.

What you get

A written findings report and a 45-minute walkthrough call. Key findings ranked by priority, plus a 90-day roadmap.

What I need

Accountant access to your books. I review only; I don't make changes. Last year's tax return helps, but it's optional.

How long

Findings within 3 business days of receiving access.

What it costs

$250, credited to your first month if you move forward. No monthly commitment.

What I look at

Whether your books can answer the questions you're asking.

  • ReconciliationsAre your bank and card accounts reconciled and current?
  • Chart of accountsIs it set up for job costing, or is it a generic list?
  • Job trackingAre costs landing on the right jobs, every time?
  • LaborIs the full cost of an hour tracked, or only gross wages?
  • SubcontractorsAre sub costs on jobs, or buried in overhead?
  • BillingAre over and under billings showing up?
  • Owner and personal spendingIs it mixed in with business costs?

What I can find depends on what's in your books. I'll tell you what I can see, and what I can't.

Labor burden isn't reaching your jobs.

What I saw

Payroll taxes and workers' comp post to overhead. Job reports show wages only.

What it means

Your jobs look more profitable than they are, and bids built from these numbers start short.

First step

Set a burden rate and apply it to job labor each payroll.

How it works

Four steps, start to finish.

We talk. You decide. On your call, we walk through the findings together. If you move forward, we set up your level. If not, the report is yours.

To give your books the attention they deserve, I need access, plus your tax return if you're including it, at least 3 business days before your call. If you need more time, we'll simply move the call.

Questions

About the diagnostic.

Will you change anything in my books?

No. You invite me as your accountant, I review only, and you can remove my access anytime.

My books are a mess. Is that a problem?

No. That's what the diagnostic is for. The report tells you what's there, what's missing, and what it would take to fix.

Do I need to send my tax return?

It helps me check that your starting balances line up, but it's optional.

Will the diagnostic fix my books?

No. It shows you what needs fixing and in what order. Cleanup is a separate project, quoted on its own.

This month's notes

  • Maple St is running 6 points under bid. Labor hours are 18% over estimate on demo and framing. Worth a look before the next kitchen bid.
  • Route 52 is under billed by $9,700. Sending the next draw on schedule closes most of the gap.
  • Cash is healthy. Nothing flagged for next month.
